Drawn c.1970 in this watercolour the tree dominates the flattened picture plane. Although he had a great love of nature Nash often used natural subjects to convey dark thoughts regarding the human condition. This pictures suggest the period of Nash’s great introspection that followed the devastation of the war. Squared for transfer. A larger version of this same subject sold at Christies in 2013.
