From around 1930 Epstein painted a large number of flower paintings after he was asked to do so by a firm of Dutch art dealers. They are now in many collections including the Tate Gallery. Epstein later wrote in his autobiography ‘Let There be Sculpture’: “I said I would paint twenty, in the end I painted sixty. Not content with this, I went on painting, giving up sculpture for the time being… I lived and painted flowers.” This picture is in its original frame.
