Provenance: Newlyn Orion Galleries Limited (now the Newlyn Art Gallery). Stanhope & Elizabeth Forbes exhibition 1981 no. 45. It has been suggested that this is a study for a fisherman in ‘Off to Skibbereen’ (1901).
Stanhope Forbes was an artist and a founding member of the influential Newlyn School of painters. He was often called ‘the father of the Newlyn School. He studied in Paris from 1880 to 1882 and then with Henry Herbert La Thangue he went to Brittany and painted en plein air which became a technique that Forbes used throughout his career. He became a Senior Royal Academician in 1933. His pictures are in numerous public collections and galleries.
