Tim Behrens was one of the School of London of the 1950's, though he said in later life that he didn't beleive it really exhisted
His portrait was painted four times by Freud and also by Michael Andrews. He was very close to Freud and they had a relationships with the same women.
By his thirties he had left London for Europe living in Spain Italy and greece. He let go a contract with Matlborough before his departure and was apalled that paintings by his contemporarys could fetch the same prices as houses.
He continued to paint all his life and also wrote.
This painting is maybe a reflection of the portrait by freud with a swathe of jumbled white rags or sheets cutting across rthe background of the painting.
