The British Antique Dealers’ Association (BADA) was founded in 1918. Its main aim is to establish and maintain confidence between its members and the public, both in buying and selling. In this it relies upon an annually reviewed membership whose comparatively small numbers are an indication of the high standards set. The BADA currently has some 360 members who are considered as meeting the required standards of knowledge, integrity and quality of stock. The Association provides safeguards for those who deal with its members, including independent arbitration if disputes arise. Many of its members have the facilities to restore, advise on the restoration of antiques and works of art, provide valuations or act as consultants. It also runs its own fair in Chelsea each Spring.

The BADA is one of the leading representative bodies for the antique dealers’ trade in the United Kingdom, and a founder member of CINOA, the international confederation of art dealers’ associations.

The BADA Cultural and Educational Trust actively supports restoration courses at West Dean College. This is in keeping with the Association’s tenet that a good antique dealer is the custodian and preserver of the artworks that he handles for future generations. Members of the public can also support this charity by becoming a Friend of the BADA Trust. The Trust runs events throughout the year, which include master-classes, visits to private collections and free admission to many antiques fairs.

The office at Rutland Gate also runs a consumer information service for those wishing to export works of art, which is recognised in many countries. The BADA office is open from 9.15 am to 5.15 pm, Monday to Friday, when the BADA staff are happy to offer advice and assistance to enquirers.

LAPADA The Association of Art & Antiques Dealers was founded in 1974 and is now the UK’s largest association of professional dealers in antiques and works of art, with over 600 dealers spread throughout the country as well as a small number overseas. Between them, members cover virtually every discipline including fine furniture, clocks, ceramics, silver, jewellery, paintings and many more.

Membership is open only to those who meet the Association’s stringent requirements as to experience, quality of stock and knowledge of their subject. All LAPADA members have agreed to abide by the Association’s strict Code of Practice. This includes the necessity for correct labelling including the price and giving information about restoration so that you can buy with confidence. In addition to the protection the Code affords, art and antiques dealers must comply with all consumer protection laws.

There are important advantages to buying from and selling to a professional dealer compared with auctions. When buying from a member of LAPADA you will be offered help and advice from someone with experience and knowledge, you will not be hurried into making a decision and you may even be given the opportunity of first trying a piece in your own home. When buying at auction you may have to pay an extra 25% on top of the sum you actually bid.

LAPADA offers a number of services to the public including free conciliation in the unlikely event of a dispute with a LAPADA member. Free publications include a booklet on The Care of Art and Antiques and a Directory of Members. We co-operate with the major regional trade associations and also belong to CINOA, the international federation of art and antiques dealers' associations.

The Association’s website at www.lapada.org offers full details of members and their stock and how to find them as well as much other useful information.
